- Reading
National Geographic's Reach for Reading program is a reading and language arts program built to align with the Common Core State Standards. It includes explicit and systematic whole and small group instruction with engaging reading resources including authentic leveled libraries, motivating main selections, and relevant, meaningful practice. Reach for Reading is built around unit themes and big ideas with each unit focusing on either a science or social studies topic. During our daily reading lessons, we work on a variety of skills including: phonics, phonemic awareness, letter recognition and letter writing, letter sounds, and reading and writing of sight words.
Daily 5/CAFE
Daily 5
Daily 5 is a framework for structuring literacy time so students develop lifelong habits of reading, writing, and working independently. Students select from five authentic reading and writing choices, working independently toward personalized goals, while the teacher meets individual needs through whole-group and small-group instruction, as well as one-on-one conferring. These choices include:
- Read to Self
- Work on Writing
- Read to Someone
- Listen to Reading
- Work on Word Work.
CAFE is a system that helps students understand and master the four key components of successful reading:
- Comprehension
- Accuracy
- Fluency
- Expanding Vocabulary

Writing
National Geographic's Writing
In the beginning of the school year, writing mostly consists of picture writing followed by labeling, then writing sight words and simple sentences. By the end of the school year, students are expected to independently write at least two complete sentences with proper capitalization, finger spaces, punctuation and phonetically spelled words. We use the Writing by Design program which focuses on helping ALL writers visualize and organize their writing before actually publishing their work.

Science
National Geographic/Exploring Science
Also new to our building this year is National Geographic's Exploring Science program. National Geographic's Exploring Science immerses students in the nature of science and science process skills. National Geographic's introduces students to scientific processes and real life experiences. Hands-on-experiences leave the students planning, conducting and reporting on open inquiry investigations. National Geographic focuses on the 5 E's which have students exploring, explaining, extending, elaborating and evaluating their understanding of scientific concepts. In Kindergarten, we focus on the following areas: science processes, physical science, life science, and earth science.
